Continuing the Vampires Rock trilogy, this latest instalment, Eternal Love, tells the story of the Vampire Baron Von Rockula who is distraught after losing the love of his life, Pandora. Returning to his ‘castle’ alongside his minion, Bosley and the Vampire-ettes, an unsuspecting local, Xeena stumbles into their lair and as it grows late, and purely for safety purposes, they stay the night.
Will Xeena survive the night?
Will Baron Von Rockula be the perfect host?
After all, what is the worst that could actually happen?
With original songs penned by Steve Steinman himself as well as appearing in the lead role, this should be a great night of original rock. However, each of the songs are exceedingly long and unfortunately this isn’t Bat Out of Hell. They stand alone rather than integrating with the story and there are often awkward pauses between dialogue and music until the lyrics kick in.
Claire Zamore as Xeena has a powerful vocal, but it feels mismatched within duets and with the Vampire-ettes appearing as backing dancers for every single song, it gives it more of a working man’s club vibe, rather than a rock musical.
John Evans as Bosley is the natural comedian here, but some jokes, particularly near the start fall flat and name checking Birmingham as the punchline for a few of them is monotonous.
Steinman’s productions clearly have a cult following, but overall, the production doesn’t live up to expectations. The live band is an enjoyable addition and does add a ‘gig’ feel to the night.
