The Addams Family

The Addams Family is back for a short whistle stop tour of five venues across the UK this summer with the first port of call being the Birmingham Hippodrome. This show is crazy kooky fun with plenty of humour, great music and for this production, a stellar cast.

Leading the family of rather unconventional Addams’ is Gomez played by Ricardo Afonso, alongside his adored and worshipped wife Morticia who is played by Alexandra Burke.  The chemistry between the pair is just as you would expect from this intertwined couple who live, and would die, for each other.  Despite the persona of the family being that of death and all things spooky, the mood was always uplifted with some very witty dialogue, quick one liners and repartee between the pair.  Vocally, Afonso and Burke were able to command each song with ease, and danced a very impressive tango, which gave flashbacks of Alexandra’s time on Strictly Come Dancing.

The story contained within the musical is really that of Wednesday Addams (Lauren Jones) who falls in love with a ‘normal’ boy Lucas Beineke (Jacob Fowler).  They plan to marry, but first their families have to meet.  There ensues a chaotic look at family life within the Addams household as we are further introduced to more of the clan, including the larger than life Lerch played with such understated presence by Dickon Gough, Uncle Fester, the moon loving brother of Gomez played by all round theatre legend Clive Rowe, Pugsley, the second child of Gomez and Morticia played with youthful joy by Nicholas McLean and finally Grandma played by true theatrical icon Lesley Joseph.  With such a fantastic cast, this show is destined to shine.

It must be said however that as this was only the second performance in the run there were a few issues of note that withheld that fifth star from my review. Some of the lighting cues were off, there were a few moments of microphones not being lifted at the right time, and throughout certain moments of the full ensemble numbers, the choreography was not perhaps as tight as it should be, however as the tour progresses I’m sure these issues will be ironed out.

Lauren Jones as Wednesday Addams is a true powerhouse of a performer.  I’ve heard many a rendition of ‘Pulled’ by various voices over the years, however Jones’ has to be one that stands out above all others. The power, the tone and storytelling throughout this number was first class. Alongside Jacob Fowler in ‘Crazier Than You’, both voices blended together perfectly, and was a real feast for the ears.

This show is great for adults and children alike, with plenty of funny and silly moments to share.  With only a short run, make sure you join the clan for this trip into the weird and wonderful world of The Addams Family.

This show was reviewed on the 11th July 2025 at Birmingham Hippodrome where it runs until the 12th July 2025. Full tour details here: UK Tour 2025 - The Addams Family - The Musical Comedy
