Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year 2026
Now in it’s 18th year the Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer Of The Year (of the SSSSPOTY’s as its affectionately known) has given us another cohort of fantastic performers to keep an eye out for in the future. It is one of the hottest contests of the year with 350 applicants from across the country whittled down to 12 finalists who are all given centre stage at the Sondheim Theatre to show off their incredible talents. Each sing 1 Sondheim song and upon the request of Steve himself, they must also sing something from the catalogue of New UK musicals which compliments their Sondheim number. It is a wonderful afternoon full of joy and emotion as the competitors bring their best to the competition.
This year was an exceptionally talented year, in previous years the winner has been obvious from the moment they opened their mouth but this year it was impossible to call. The esteemed judging panel made up of Edward Seckerson, Melanie La Barrie, Andy Nyman, Jenna Russell, Rachel Tucker and Matt Wolf really had their work cut out for them. In fact, it took them much longer than expected to deliberate due to the high quality of performances!
Runner Up Taziva-Faye Kastsande from BIRD Conservatoire
Everyone who took part was fantastic but of course there can only be one winner and this year. Charlotte English took the crown, her rendition of ‘I Read’ from Passion was exceptional, it was full of emotion and power which along with her 2nd song of ‘The Sparrows Tale’ had the audience in the palm of her hand, a worthy winner. Second place went to Taziva – Faye Katsande who sang ‘Last Midnight’ from Into The Woods with an energy that drew me in immediately to her world. She followed this with ‘Peace in the Puzzle’ from ‘Turing: A Musical’ which was just exceptional, this is a name to watch out for in the future undoubtedly! This year there was also a 3rd place prize given to Rosie Sutton who very bravely took on ‘Getting Married Today’ from Company, which is renowned as one of the most difficult “patter” songs from the Sondheim repertoire, so much so there were murmurs of shock from the audience at the announcement that Rosie would be signing it but she absolutely proved to us all that she could perform it with perfect energy and comedic timing which contrasted wonderfully with her choice from the world of new UK musicals of ‘Colour in my Cheeks’ from ‘Heart of Winter’ which was a warm romantic style song that showed us her beautiful voice wonderfully.
There were many other standouts throughout the afternoon, in particular I enjoyed Cait Du Feu who sang ‘I Wish I Could Forget You’ from ‘Passion’ and ‘The Little Match Girl’. Cait had huge stage presence which immediately enraptured the audience. Samuel Louis Bennett also blew the audience away with ‘Waiters Song’ from ‘Here We Are’ with several audience members commenting that they enjoyed the inclusion of something from a more modern Sondheim show.
Third place Rosie Sutton from the University of Oxford
We were also treated to some wonderful guest performances while the judges took to their deliberations. Last years winner Georgia Blessitt returned to sing her winning song ‘Losing My Mind’, Stuart Thompson who won the competition in 2019 sang ‘Petrichor’ from ‘FlyBy’, Gracie McGonigal showed us why she is the best Little Red there is with ‘I Know Things Now’ from ‘Into The Woods’ and our host for the afternoon Bella Brown stunned with ‘Not A Day Goes By’ from ‘Merrily We Roll Along’. We also got to see the National Youth Musical Theatre Ensemble give us a preview of their summer production of ‘West Side Story’ which was a delight.
If you’re a fan of Stephen Sondheim or not, this is a wonderful afternoon to attend. You spend 3 hours in the company of fellow theatre fans watching the starts of tomorrow take their first steps onto a stage and performing for an audience, it is a very special experience and one which I look forward to every year, and you never know who may make it big and you can say ‘I saw them first!’
