Sleeping Beauty
The Wolverhampton Grand Panto is always a highlight in my theatrical calendar and this year it’s bigger and better than ever! This show is filled with humour, exceptional talent and incredible sets, not to mention a gigantic dragon!
Set in the fictional town of Bilstonia we can be certain of the bare bones of the Sleeping Beauty fable by the Brothers Grimm, however add in the talent of writers Tam Ryan and Ian Adams with an up to date, topical script, the audience barely have time to take a breath in between the non stop hilarity. It’s clear this show has been a complete labour of love by the much loved duo and it was a delight to hear so many people getting into to spirit of what pantomime is……fun!
Ian Adams and Tam Ryan are a staple of the Wolverhampton Panto and this year play mother and son, the Fortune's. Every moment they perform together is full of witty repartee, multiple jokes and audience interaction. It’s clear they enjoy performing together and it shines through. Where Ryan really excels is his moment at the end of the show with four children pulled from the audience to take part in a song. The talent of improvisational comedy is something that can’t be taught….you either have funny bones or you don’t and Ryan has a body full of them! Adams brings that old school charm and his professionalism to the craft is clear to see.
This years cast is exceptional with Danny Beard as the most delicious baddie I think I may have ever seen. Entering to “Get This Party Started” he did that in abundance with flair, camp delight and incredible talent. Weaving in his own version of ‘Cell Block Tango’ from Chicago gave me that musical theatre vibe that I crave and if he’s not cast in that show in the future I’d be very disappointed! Every nuance had been expertly crafted to provide the younger members of the audience that need to boo and hiss throughout, and Beard clearly lapped it up. Absolutely perfect casting and a complete highlight from the night.
Other cast members equally shone on stage, whether that be Debra Stephenson being not only the Queen of Bilstonia but the Queen of impressions with many a funny moment with the likes of Donald Trump and Anne Robinson, to Zak Douglas who was every inch a complete ray of sunshine. Having worked front of house at the theatre previously, it was a delight to see Zak have his moment and he delivered in every aspect. Solomon Davy and Georgia Iudica-Davies as Prince Stephen and Princess Aurora once again gave me that musical theatre moment with fantastic vocals throughout.
Pantomime is such a special art form, whether it be slap stick routines including cream pies and scenery falling down, the always funny 12 Days of Christmas routine or big production numbers, Wolverhampton Grand Theatre have just got it bang on this year. Something for everyone and a delight to watch from start to finish. The lavish and sparkling sets topped off the whole experience.
This is one Panto to see this festive season, so head down to Bilstonia where you may just get to kiss the most adorable Black Country frog and find a Prince of your own!
