Sinners - Forbidden
Nestled below their sister restaurant, The Eden Lounge, you’ll find Sinners, the latest venue from Cabaret impresario Alex Proud.
Located on Shoreditch’s Great Eastern Street, a stone’s throw from the Old Street roundabout, the venue was previously Temper Shoreditch, a barbeque and steak restaurant which is now looking to turn up the heat with more than just the grill…
Whilst it looks as though, bar the addition of a small stage and some occasionally suggestive neon lights, the space remains mainly unchanged from it’s previous incarnation with an open kitchen counter at one end of the room and seating generously spaced around the rest of the room.
The format is simple, you reserve a table for dinner (with options ranging from £125 to £275 per person depending on how indulgent you’re feeling…) with each option including a 3 course meal (with vegetarian option available).
There is table service throughout the evening with a very reasonably priced wine/drinks list (house white at £23, red at £27) all delivered by a suitably sexy and friendly team of waiters who were attentive and ensured there was never an empty glass nor hungry guest in the room.
Arrival times are staggered (you choose at the time of booking) which makes the whole process much smoother, there’s no mad rush before the show begins to order drinks and the food is paced so everyone eats at their own pace and at their own time rather than a production line feel that can often come from similar events.
The food itself was very decent – blue corn tacos with lamb to start and a seared lamb rump for the main course – perhaps not of the standard Temper offered but certainly a very strong effort and good use of the presumably inherited grill. The only off note of the entire evening was the dessert – a rather sad skin-on banana that had briefly glanced at the grill before being doused in chocolate sauce.
But less about the food and onto the show itself; throughout the course of the evening we were treated to a variety of very skilled performers, from singers to burlesque with some fire-breathing thrown in for good measure!
Given Proud Cabaret’s reputation, it’s perhaps no surprise that there isn’t a single act who doesn’t wow, the show is certainly burlesque heavy which given the name/theme is unsurprising. Audience participation is handled well with the feeling that everyone is a part of the show without the potential embarrassment of being dragged up on stage.
Whilst the venue isn’t perfect for it’s sightlines, the seating is spaced well enough apart for guests to move around a little if required for a better view however the performers were adept at making sure they worked the room and used the space so nobody felt left out.
During the performances guests were free to move around, as were the waiters avoiding any of the awkwardness of needing to use the bathroom mid power ballad.
There was also a tarot card reader sat at one of the tables offering free readings throughout the night - a nice touch and opportunity to have some fun during a break in the performance.
In summary, it’s always a tricky balance to put on a dinner and a show performance without one of the elements disappointing but (banana aside) Sinners delivered, the audience were a very diverse mixed and I’d confidently say every one of them had a great night.
Whilst the tickets aren’t cheap, there are often discounts/offers available and the quality of the meal and performances along with the reasonable drinks pricing means this is definitely a show I’d recommend!
