RIDE - Album Review

Ahead of its run at Southwark Playhouse Elephant from the 19th July 2023 until the 12th August 2023, we have been treated to a release of ‘Ride – A New Musical’ cast recording. Being released today (June 9th) I’ve been allowed an early listen and let me tell you, it’s fantastic!

It’s 1895 and Annie Londonderry has returned victorious to America, hailed as the first woman ever to cycle around the world. She’s pioneering, she’s plucky, and she’s pitching her story to the men who run the newspapers.

From the infamous wager that set her journey in motion, to her freewheeling adventures with captains, cowboys, and customs officials, Annie just knows her tales will spin readers into a frenzy.

But as she approaches rough terrain, and unexpected paths throw her off balance, can Annie regain her footing, or will she confront the past she left behind?

This is an outstanding recording of a brilliant new show, Liv Andrusier takes on the role of Annie and sounds phenomenal, her voice has beautiful tones which are a joy to listen to.

The opening number ‘The World’s Greatest Story’ perfectly grabs my attention and is a real ear worm!

Writers Freya Catrin Smith and Jack Williams have beautifully put together this collection of songs, each wonderfully giving us more of the story and perfectly written to stay in your head for days!

There are magnificent upbeat songs as well as slow moving ballads which tug on the heartstrings. In particular ‘Out of Time’ sung by the supremely talented Yuki Sutton has become a favourite listen!

‘The Charmed Existence of Fred Rose’ is a song that feels very relevant to daily life, telling of male privilege and the class advantages of Annie’s love interest.

The album gives us a clear insight to the story and having listened to it (multiple times, because I just can’t get enough!) this show has shot to the top of my ‘must see’ list!!
