Legally Blonde
Based on the hit 2001 film, Legally Blonde: The Musical follows Elle Woods, whose life is turned upside down when her boyfriend, Warner, dumps her in favour of someone he considers more suitable for his future career in law. Determined to win him back, Elle follows him to Harvard Law School, where she quickly discovers that being taken seriously in a world of suits, stereotypes and high expectations is no easy task. However, as she navigates the challenges of university life, makes unexpected friendships and discovers her own potential, Elle begins to realise that she is capable of far more than anyone, including herself, ever imagined.
This production, currently gracing the stage at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre guarantees a night of laughs, fun and two of the most adorable dogs you'll see on stage.....shout out to 'Sprout' as Bruiser Woods and 'Rocco' as Rufus who completely stole the show on every occasion they appeared on stage!
Leading the cast is Amber Davies as the bubbly, larger-than-life and utterly endearing Elle Woods. A true force of nature, Davies delivers exceptional vocals while effortlessly balancing Elle’s comedic charm with moments of genuine vulnerability. She commands the stage with infectious energy and charisma, drawing the audience in and making us fall more and more in love with Elle as the story unfolds.
We were fortunate to see some of the show’s understudies take to the stage during this performance, including Keanna Bloomfield as Paulette. Bloomfield impressed with her effortless vocal ability and impeccable comedic timing, raising plenty of laughs with Paulette’s infatuation with delivery driver Kyle, played by Ty-Reece Stewart. Their on-stage chemistry made for some truly memorable moments, adding another layer of charm and humour to the production.
As camp and exuberant as you might expect, Legally Blonde: The Musical stays true to the much-loved film, with the story flowing seamlessly from screen to stage. There are moments when the action feels a little rushed, with scenes moving on before you have quite had time to process the previous one. However, this does little to detract from the overall experience, with the show’s fast-paced energy keeping the audience thoroughly entertained. Its greatest charm lies in its willingness not to take itself too seriously, embracing the fun, the flamboyance and the occasional ridiculousness to create a thoroughly enjoyable theatrical experience.
The music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin are integral to the storytelling, bringing the production to life through a series of infectious, upbeat numbers. Standout songs such as ‘Omigod You Guys’, ‘Whipped Into Shape’ and ‘Bend and Snap’ showcase the talents of the ensemble cast, whose energy and precision are matched by Leah Hill’s choreography. Fun, slick and bursting with personality, the routines add another layer of exuberance to this already vibrant production.
Ultimately, Legally Blonde: The Musical is a fabulous feel-good night at the theatre, bursting with infectious energy, laugh-out-loud moments and a wonderfully uplifting message about believing in yourself. With a talented cast, catchy musical numbers and plenty of camp, colourful fun, it captures everything that makes the story so beloved while delivering a thoroughly entertaining theatrical experience. Amber Davies shines at the heart of the production, reminding us that there is far more to Elle Woods than meets the eye. Whether you are a fan of the original film or discovering Elle’s journey for the first time, this is a production that leaves you smiling.
