The RSC’s First Encounters are designed to be suitable for students that are studying Shakespeare’s plays in school. However, they are also a great introduction for anyone of any age and any level of understanding or study to familiarise themselves with a particular play.
The Tempest is set on a magical island where Prospero and his daughter, Miranda escaped years before. When a storm brings the King of Naples and Prospero’s estranged Sister Antonio stranded on to the island, Prospero decides to seek revenge.
Was the storm all that it seemed?
Can forgiveness take place between these family members?
And can Prospero release the islanders in his control?
This is an 80-minute version of Shakespeare’s play and condenses the action nicely. The costumes, designed by Aldo Vazquez, combine the traditional Elizabethan style with a more modern twist and the Islanders have the more flamboyant colours that link to the magical surroundings.
Carla Garratt as Ariel, has an instant rapport with the young audience and controls the stage and their attention as the production begins. Shakeel Haakim as Caliban has a great stage presence and holds the audiences intrigue with his characters unusual behaviour.
Scout Worsley as Miranda and Garon Akbar Clark as Ferdinand have some nice moments amidst the strangeness of the Island and its new visitors as Aaron Parsons direction makes the story flow seamlessly and allows the tale to be understood.
The introduction of the style of songs included for the characters are engaging and maintain a more modern feel to the play.
Suitable for all, this a charming and captivating production that comes highly recommended from us!
