A Confession of Murder

A Confession of Murder is a reimagining of the 1950’s Japanese film Rashomon, adapted for the stage by Co-Writers Sam Colby and Andy Yau (both founders of The Rekindled Ensemble theatre company, who also direct and produce the piece).

Set in 1920’s Yorkshire, Iris has been invited to spend time at Blackwood Manor by her old school friend and now Lady of the Manor, Gertrude. Whilst there, Lord Blackwood is found dead on the floor of his study and his steward Edward has confessed to his murder. As conflicting accounts surface, the truth becomes impossible to understand. Is it just each person’s perspective of the events? Are they all just covering their tracks? Or do they all just have secrets that they wish to remain hidden?

Kiya Haines plays Iris Silverwood, her storytelling is clear and concise, and she maintains her calm exterior and curiosity throughout events.

Completing the company are Liesanne Musico as Lady Gertrude, George Cooper as Sir William Blackthorne and Sam Colby as Edward Hargrove.

Emily McCauley also appears as Eva Preston, and whilst we don’t see much of her character, she is a strong player and has some nice moments that move the story along.

The set is small and basic, but enough to set each scene comfortably and the sound and lighting add an element of maintaining the era and situation well.

A Confession of Murder is part of Birmingham Fest 25 which continues at venues across Birmingham until 27 July. This show was reviewed on the 15th July 2025 at the Blue Orange Theatre, Birmingham.  You can search for 'Blue Orange Theatre' online for details of future shows, or search 'Bham Fest' for more details for this event.
