Robin Hood

"A fantastic family friendly festive treat about everyone’s favourite thief"

I had the pleasure of reviewing this year’s Panto “Robin Hood” at the Greenwich Theatre and I’m so glad I did.

The show was sadly delayed 40 minutes due to tech problems, but it was worth the wait. The show, written by and starring Anthony Spargo was a treat for all ages from start to finish.

The show featured music for everyone, from Kate Bush to Lizzo and everything in between all brilliantly played by the on-stage musicians Chris Wyles, Steve Markwich and Gordon Parish. The band all join the action throughout the show and are seen as part of the cast rather than supporting them.

The titular Robin was played by the young David Breeds, fresh out of the West End playing in Dear Evan Hansen. Breeds brings a brilliant enthusiasm to the role and holds himself against the rest of the cast magically. His voice is the real stand out and blows every song out of the water.

His counterpart Maid Marian was played by Amy Bastani who matched Robin in the vocal department and then some. It felt at times that she wasn’t as willing to play and have fun as the other members of the team, but she made up for it in her ability and charm all the way through.

The real show stealer is the local legend Anthony Spargo who has been writing and starring in the Greenwich Panto every year for some time now. He Plays the evil Sheriff of Nottingham and his manic energy throughout the show goes unmatched. It makes him very hard to dislike which considering this is a panto, we can definitely let slide. He has worked wonders with this show and deserves all the praise he can get.

I will also leave a mention to the supporting cast members Sam Rowe and Millen Scrivener, both currently studying at the local drama school Trinity Laban who brought an incredible amount of energy to their roles and did a service to themselves and their school.

All in all, I couldn’t have asked for a better start to Christmas and wish the show every success. If you have the opportunity to take your loved ones to a panto this year, I can highly recommend this one.

This production was reviewed on the 2nd December 2022.  Robin Hood runs at the Greenwich Theatre until the 8th January 2023.  Tickets available here: Robin Hood - Greenwich Theatre
