Dr Adam Perchard & Richard Thomas:
Interview With The Vamp

Sitting in the atmospheric basement space in the Soho Theatre as composer, pianist and ‘interviewer’ for the night Richard Thomas takes his seat at the piano, a booming voice off-stage announces the arrival of Dr Adam Perchard. As they arrive on stage, their towering presence of sequins and hair, Dr Adam leads us on a 60 minute tour de force.

The format of the evening is that of an interview, Richard asks 10 questions to which Adam responds in song (or in one answer a spoken word poem).

The songs themselves all originals by this highly talented duo, mostly autobiographical or self-referencing Adam’s voice is as striking as their appearance whilst Richard’s piano is faultless.

It can be tricky to keep the momentum and pace in a work comprised entirely of original songs with which the majority of the audience would be hearing for the first time, but here there was never a lull, no song that felt out of place or didn’t work. Repeatedly the audience were in tears of laughter at the witty wordplay and acute observations within the songs.

It’s evident both performers are classically trained from the faultless delivery and clearly both enjoying the evening as much as the audience.

It was no surprise to see a standing ovation at the end, this was an hour of hilarious and relentless talent.
